How to convert SVG to ICO
- Choose SVG files. Each file is checked before a source preview is rendered.
- Choose the icon sizes to include in each ICO and select a background.
- Convert, inspect the finished preview, then download an image or the completed batch as ZIP.
One icon file, several useful sizes
An ICO is a container that can hold several square raster images. Choose any combination of 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px. The default is 16, 32, 48 and 256 px. Every selected layer is rendered directly from your SVG; smaller layers are not reductions of a single large bitmap.
Artwork is fitted and centered without cropping or stretching. Non-square sources leave space around the image. A usable aspect ratio from dimensions or viewBox is required. Small labels and fine strokes may disappear at 16 px: simplify your source and check the finished icon at its actual display size.
Transparency and icon compatibility
Layers below 256 px use 32-bit bitmap data with alpha and a transparency mask. The 256 px layer uses PNG inside the ICO container. Transparent is the default background; white and a custom solid color are available. The preview checkerboard is never written into the file.
Modern applications can select an appropriate layer, but support varies. Older software may not understand PNG-compressed layers or partial alpha. Choose smaller bitmap layers and a solid background when required by your destination. This browser tool does not certify compatibility with every Windows version or desktop application.
Use the download as a favicon
Upload the downloaded icon to your own website and point a rel="icon" link at its path, with type="image/x-icon". A common filename is favicon.ico. Clear the browser favicon cache or use a new URL when checking a replacement icon.
ICO alone does not supply an Apple touch icon, web app manifest icons or an entire application icon package. Those destinations can require separate PNG assets. Keep your original SVG and use SVG to PNG for those additional sizes.
Static artwork, bounded batches
Up to 50 SVG files are accepted, with a 10 MB per-file and 50 MB batch limit. Scripts, event handlers, external images or fonts, HTML content and animation are rejected. Embedded images, SVG elements and filter complexity have separate safety limits. A file that fails inspection does not prevent valid files from completing.
Completed image results have a 64 MB memory budget. When the next result would exceed it, download the finished part, confirm that it saved, then continue. Cancellation stops upcoming work and discards stale results; a synchronous browser draw already in progress cannot be forcibly interrupted. Use smaller batches on mobile devices.
Keep the source and choose the right output
These downloads contain raster pixels, not editable SVG paths. Save your original separately. SVG to PNG provides lossless raster output; SVG to JPG provides compatibility with a solid background; SVG to WebP offers transparent, quality-controlled web images; SVG to ICO bundles icon sizes into one file.
Files and ZIPs are processed locally. Optional analytics excludes filenames, SVG text and output bytes. Read how to verify local processing or identify another image format.
SVG to ICO questions
Is the download a real ICO or a renamed PNG?
It is a real ICO container with a directory and separate image layers. Smaller sizes use 32-bit bitmap layers; the optional 256 px layer contains PNG data. The extension is .ico.
Which icon sizes can I choose?
Choose one or more of 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px. The default selection is 16, 32, 48 and 256 px. All selected sizes are stored in one ICO for each SVG.
Does SVG to ICO preserve transparency?
Yes. The default keeps alpha transparency. Bitmap layers also include a mask for fully transparent pixels. Older software may handle partial alpha differently; choose a solid background when necessary.
Why does the preview show only one size?
The preview shows the largest rendered layer from your last conversion. The download contains every selected layer. Inspect the small sizes in the application where the icon will be used.
Can I make a favicon from a non-square SVG?
Yes, if the SVG has usable dimensions or a viewBox. Artwork is fitted and centered in each square layer without stretching or cropping. Empty space stays transparent unless you choose a background.
Can I convert several SVGs without uploading them?
Yes. Static SVG inspection, rendering, ICO packing and ZIP creation all run locally. Up to 50 files, 10 MB each and 50 MB total are accepted. Scripts, animation and external resources are rejected.
